Grater Plater Review

by Dale Harcourt on April 28, 2010

Grater Plater is a porcelain plate that is lined with ridges to grate your food on the same serving plate. The idea is that you can grate cheese, chocolate, ginger, garlic, orange zest or cinnamon and reuse the grate as a serving plate. We ordered one for the office and gave it a try.

Grater Plater immediately has some advantages over a standard cheese grater, especially in terms of safety and style. Because it is a flat plate and not a free-standing cowbell-type grater, it cuts down on nicks and cuts that frequently occur with graters. You don’t have to put all your arm strength into slicing against a vertical wall and the ceramic grooves are both firm and effective.

Who It’s For

The Grater Plater is perfect for light baking needs and people hosting small dinner parties that want to cut down on the amount of work and cleaning. It is ideal for small amounts of food, like if you need a little bit of lemon zest or a sprinkling of chocolate for a cake or a little bit of cheese dip. Grater Plater is convenient and portable and looks nice amongst other dishes, whereas you would have to store a regular grater with your cookware.

That said, for large-scale jobs and serious baking, a traditional grader has many more advantages. It would be larger and more suited for bigger servings. It would be more versatile with softer cheeses as well. Grater Plater makes a nice compliment; it would not be a total substitute for a grater if you consider yourself a serious baker.

What You Get For How Much

Two for One Grater Plater offers two Grater Platers for $10, but you have to pay shipping on each. So the total cost is $24.98, which includes:

You also have the option at checkout to purchase additional offers and extra features, but we recommend going with the basic package first and seeing if it’s your thing. These bonus offers include:

  • Collectible plate and herb grater ($9.99 plus $4.99 shipping)
  • Quick chop ($9.99 plus $4.99 shipping)
  • Priority handling ($6.99 extra)

How Did It Hold Up

The Grater Plater had its share of positives and negatives that evened out into a reliable product that lives up to its advertising. The details are below, but check out our video review where we tested it out on several common items:

Positives

On the plus side, the Grater Plater does work as advertised, especially on firm foods. We found that it worked best on hard chocolate, parmesan cheese, ginger and garlic. It was also effective with the orange and lemon zest, although not in large quantities (which we’ll get to in the negatives).

The ceramic is certainly a nicer piece of kitchenware than a large and clunky cheese grater and it is reasonable to grate some hard cheese and then use the plate for serving and dipping, even though you would quickly run out due to the plate’s small size. It took a little while to get a feel for the flat surface, but once we got into a rhythm, we found the grating to be a cinch.

Grates a variety of foods

Negatives

The down side to Grater Plater is the size and difficulty with grating soft foods. We also found the small ceramic teeth to be a hindrance because once each groove filled up, the Grater Plater quickly became ineffective. While it definitely worked well, once we tried doing large amounts of food, we couldn’t fill it up anymore. The plate is small and flat, so it doesn’t have the vertical design and size of a traditional cheese grater.

The other down side was that it did not work well for soft cheeses. Granted most cheese graters would have the same problem, but you won’t get much work done on a stick of cheddar with Grater Plater.

Final Verdict

Grater Plater lives up to its advertisements better than most products, although it might not be your final stop for cheese grating, especially if you do a lot of hosting. It works very well on hard foods and also doubles as a nice serving plate, which is perfect for a dinner with the family. Soft foods and large quantities are its weaknesses, but the size issue is solved by orders including two for the price of one and the option to order a larger plate.

All in all, you might want to hold on to clunkier cheese graters you may currently own, but Grater Plater is a nice compliment to your baking and serving needs and we can recommend this product.

How To Buy

Grater Plater is available at 2for1graterplater.com where, as you would guess, your order includes two grater platers, two gathering brushes and two garlic peels.
